Cultivation of cranberries

They can grow and survive only under a very special combination of factors. Cranberries thrive in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. They are often grown on sandy or peaty bogland properties found in wetlands. Wetlands are nature's sponges; they store and purify water and help to maintain the water table. Cranberries grow in beds layered with sand, peat and gravel.

Cranberries can grow in ordinary acid soil. Planted in ordinary soil add plenty of peat moss or other organic matter and use a heavy peat moss mulch to protect plants in the winter months.

Cranberries are perennial, and once planted they will keep producing crops year after year even with minimal care. Growers use water to protect cranberries from frost and hot weather in summer. As a general rule, each acre of cranberries will use seven to ten feet of water to meet all production, harvesting and flooding needs. There are two main ways cranberry growers bring water onto the bogs – through sprinkler systems and through flooding.

Cranberry plants grow runners measuring from 1 to 6 feet long with dark green, glossy leaves during its growth phase and reddish brown during the dormant season.

The plant should start producing cranberries in 2 to 3 years. Harvest in late September to early October. They develop in large clusters making them easy to pick. When they are ready to harvest the seed turns a brownish color and the berries turn a burgundy color.

History of blueberries cultivation

The blueberry is a member of the heath family (Ericaceae) and is native to North America and East Asia. Wild Blueberries emerged on the desolate plain, aptly called The Barrens of Maine, Eastern Canada, and Quebec, following the retreat of the glaciers more than 10,000 years ago.

Blueberry cultivation is thought to have started when Native Americans burned wild stands of lowbush blueberries (V. angustifolium Ait. and V. myrtilloides Michx.) to tend them and to increase production. Wild blueberries were utilized for making medicines, dyes, and flavorings, as well as for direct consumption.

More advanced blueberry domestication began in New Hampshire in 1908 by the United States Department of Agriculture. Highbush blueberry cultivation and breeding programs, which began in the early 1900s, paved the way for the modern blueberry industry

In 1911 Dr F.V. Goville of the U.S.D.A. began a series of crosses among six native selections of three Vaccinium species (V. australe, V. corymbosum and V. angustifoliam). This work led to the release of the first named cultivar Pioneer in 1920.

By the 1930s and 1940s, blueberries were being grown in North Carolina and the West Coast, with further expansion occurring in subsequent decades.

Since 1960 and up to 1977 a further 15 highbush Blueberry cultivars, have been released to the USA industry by various public agencies.

Since the 20th century American blueberry species and varieties have been spread to Europe.

European cultivation of highbush blueberry began after 1920, in the Netherlands. In the following years cultivation spread to Poland and Germany, where the first European blueberry breeding products, crosses of Northern American were introduced.

However, highbush blueberry cultivation did not expand into southwestern European until the 1980s.

What are the important requirements for growing blueberries?

Blueberries require a sunny location for full production. Avoid areas surrounded by trees. Trees can provide too much shade, compete with plants for water and nutrients, encourage birds, and interfere with air movement around the plants. Poor air circulation favors the development of diseases.

Full sun is desirable, but up to 50 percent shade is usually acceptable. Yield is reduced with increasing shade. Select a site that has sun for at least half the day. Blueberries have very specific soil requirements. Plants grow best in well‑drained, light, sandy loam soils that are high in organic matter.

Blueberries require a soil pH of 4.0 to 5.3 for best growth. The primary material recommended for lowering soil pH is finely ground wettable sulfur. The soil may be supplemented with peat or pine bark.

Although blueberries require readily available moisture, they will not tolerate poor drainage. Blueberries require well-drained, acidic soil that is high in organic matter. Adequate soil drainage is essential.

Blueberry plants will not tolerate excessive moisture (wet feet) for long periods. Ideal soils are well drained with a water table 14 to 22 inches below the surface. Blueberry plants are sensitive to frost damage. Therefore, it is important to avoid planting in low-lying areas.

Early cultivation of blueberries in history

American Indians have gathered the fruit for centuries and still contribute considerably to the harvest. It was they who introduced the practice of burning to control encroaching shrubs, trees and other unwanted “weeds” and to kill the pests and disease that invade the blueberry patches.

This method was very discriminating and the European settlers arriving in Maine found a wild, desolate landscape, often with many thousands of acres charred and apparently barren, In Washington County, Maine, the first area of land was officially designated a “barren” in 1796.

This term is now widely used to describe such wild, open spaces and “blueberry barrens” refer to the area with large patches of lowbush blueberries. It was soon apparent that blueberries thrived under these burning practices and anybody who wanted to could descend on the barrens to harvest the berries for their own use and later resale.

By the end of the eighteenth century, most of the land was owned by settlers but others could still freely access it. The freeloaders continued with their indiscriminate burning, which not only increased the area where blueberries thrived but also did considerable damage to the land.

A stumpage fee was introduced in 1871, a levy that was collected from anyone gathering wild blueberries and that was designed to compensate landowners and to reduce indiscriminate burning. Larger landowners began to lease out areas of land to control production and harvesting and that was the beginning of modern management of wild blueberries.

Two innovations that occurred in the mid of 1800s stand out, the first was the introduction of canning, which began in the 1860s out the need to feed Federal troops of the Union Army during Civil War.

Canning undoubtedly helped to increase the demand for wild blueberries, and many tons were shipped out by boats form small poets along the Maine coastline. The building of the railways changed that, however, and by 1899 the Washington County Railroad transported virtually all blueberry fruit and blueberry products out of the area.

The second innovations occurred in 1883. As can be appreciated, picking the small berries individually and by hand is a lengthy and tedious business and one that becomes increasingly uneconomic. The blueberry rake invented by Abijah W. Tabbut, revolutionized the whole business of wild blueberry hosting.

Planting blueberry plants

Blueberry plants can be obtained from the nursery bare-rooted, potted or balled-and-burlapped.

Because most blueberries are no self-fertile, the plant must at least two different cultivars to get fruit, and three are even more effective for good cross-pollination.

For growing blueberries successfully, the plants must be vigorous and produce good crops each year.

Plant bushes should be 1 to 2 inches deeper than they were in nursery and 4 to 6 feet in rows spaced 8 to 10 feet apart.

Blueberries are shallow-rooted so all he nutrients and moisture the plants need must be available in the top few inches of soil.

They grow well in acidic soil. If the soil is alkaline, aluminum sulfate needs to be added to lower the pH to below 6. On fertile soils very little fertilizer may be required, but in poor soils larger amounts may be necessary to maintain satisfactory growth.

Although blueberries can be planted in the fall, spring planting is safer and is recommended in most areas.
