In the issue of Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry dated May 4, 2005, it was reported that blueberries contain a beneficial compound called pterostilbene.
Pterostilbene’s lipid lowering ability was superior to both resveratrol and the prescription drug Ciprofibrate.
Research has shown that pterostilbene has been found to up-regulate the gene that codes for PPAR alpha, which leads to decrease triglycerides and LDL and supports healthy glucose levels.
Pterostilbene “may be potential anti-proliferative agent for the treatment of atherosclerosis” according to a study published in Vascular Pharmacology.
Because pterostilbene is such a small molecule it can easily enter cancer cells, where it appears to destroy the cell’s membrane and DNA and cause the cell to self-destruct.
