Soil suitable for blueberry

Blueberries are fussy about their soil requirements. They’re acid loving plants with very specific soil needs, including lots of decomposed organic matter and an acidic pH of 4.5 to 5.2.

Soil conditions are often amended with organic matter in blueberry plantings to adjust the pH and improve drainage.

They require a sunny location. All blueberries have shallow roots and need moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil throughout the growing season.  Provide plenty of leafmould into the soil at planting time.

Native blueberry soils generally have a shallow water table approximately 2 feet deep that supplies uniform moisture during the growing season. Constantly saturated soils are undesirable.
